Over 60's team to join local Matlock League

In  April the Over 60's team we will be joining an OVER 60s (Strictly over 60s) League based at Matlock Cavendish Fields.

The league where the team previously played in Nottingham has now ceased and this is the Club's chosen replacement league .

The League will take place on the last Wednesday of every month and 2 games will be played against local teams during the morning. The pitch is 4G a great surface and teams are 6 aside with qualified referees. On match days the team is chosen from the pool with 8 players to play in the matches.

Anyone Over 60 would like to join the squad for the forthcoming season please contact Terry Ashley, the manager, or Rob Church.

Over 50's play friendly match against Santos Nottingham

The Senior Spireites over-50s played a friendly on 18th March against Santos Nottingham, who are preparing for a tournament in Portugal. Following the rules for the tournament, we played 7-a-side with a 3-touch limit on a large pitch without boards, so very different from the usual rules!

In the first quarter, Chesterfield team settled into a defensive formation as they got used to the different playing conditions, although they were caught out by the 3-touch limit a few times! In a tight quarter, there were no goals with both teams having a few half-chances, Spireites keeper Darren Townsend making several good saves.

The second quarter started with Santos taking the lead after confusion in the Spireites midfield allowed a Santos player through unchallenged to volley in the opener. The Spireites responded well and equalised through a tremendous free-kick strike by Darryl Davies, assisted by Mark Pickering. It was 1-1 at half time.

The third quarter was tight with few chances for either team, making it 1-1 going into the final 15 minutes.

Santos took the lead early in the fourth quarter and despite some pressure, the Spireites could not find an answer. As they pressed for the equaliser, Santos were able to score another on the break and followed this with two more to secure the win.

This was a great performance from the Spireites in unfamiliar conditions and it was obvious that the large pitch took its toll in the last 15 minutes. The Santos manager even commented that the final score flattered his team and the game was pretty even until the very end. The Spireites should be proud of the way they adapted to the rules and the conditions, and we look forward to a return game later in the year at Dronfield.

Spireites win SWFC Community Trust tournament

The Senior Spireites were invited to play in the first annual walking football tournament organised by Sheffield Wednesday Community Trust. This was an open-age tournament (18+) and the Spireites team consisted mostly of over-50s players, with a couple of under-50s and some over-60s.

The Spireites finished as the only unbeaten team with 6 wins and a draw and were convincing tournament winners. Top scorer was Yashin Umerji with 7 goals with excellent goal scoring contributions from Darryl Davies, Tej Buhal, Gui Carneiro and Rob Ward. Defensively the record was the best in the tournament thanks to Steve Kehoe, Chris Tann, Gary Allison and keeper Karlos Oakkdaen. Congratulations to the team and to the organisers for a very enjoyable event!

Over 50's vs Over 60's - 27th August

In preparation for their respective League competitions starting in September the Spireites Over 50's played a friendly match against the Over 60's in 3 x 16 Minute games refereed by Club Chairman Malc Perks at the Dronfield Akademy.

Both teams did not field their strongest squads including both first choice goal keepers who were unavailable but the games were a good workout for all. The Over 60s won all 3 matches 2-1, 1-0 and 3-1.

After the games a well deserved pint was consumed in the Akademy bar by both teams. Special thanks to Malc for giving up his time to referee.

A repeat match will be arranged in the New Year.

Over 50's in Derbyshire League Cup - 7th August

The Over 50s played in the Derbyshire League Cup for the first time. The first game was against Stanton which the Spireites won 1-0, the second game was a 1-1 draw against Etwall, who won the league last year. The third game was against Old Kilburn which also ended in a 1-1 draw. This meant that the Spireites topped the group and played Kilburn in the semi final.

A hard fought 1-1 draw left the match to be decided with a penalty shoot out. In the penalty sudden death Old Kilburn won. The Spireites played very well and their form bodes well for the upcoming Derbyshire League season. The penalty shootout aside, the boys in blue remain unbeaten in all their matches so far...

Over 60's vs Matlock - 23rd July

The Over 60's team played Matlock Over 50s and lost to them on aggregate 4-1 over 3 x 20 minute games with the scores being 1-0, 2-1 and 1-0

The Matlock team are a very good side and will play in the Open Sheffield league next season.

The Senior Spireites played and defended as a team very well starting with the strikers against a side at least 10 years younger. This was a good test and a learning experience.

A couple more friendlies will be arranged prior to the season starting on Tuesday 16th Sept at Nottingham. .

Over 50's vs Mansfield- 5th June

The Over-50s took on Mansfield Community Trust in a friendly match. The match was played in a great spirit and both teams enjoyed the experience of playing in the shadows of Mansfield Town's ground. The Spireites started strongly but were caught on the break as Mansfield went ahead. However, the Spireites continued to play good football and equalised through Nigel Strong before Dave Simpson gave the Chesterfield the lead before half time.

After the break, Mansfield piled on the pressure but the Spireites remained solid defensively, with goalkeeper Darren Townsend in excellent form, before scoring further goals through Darryl Davies and a second for Dave Simpson. A consolation for Mansfield a few minutes from the end meant a final result of 4-2 to the Spireites.

Over 50's vs Bakewell - 21st May

The Over-50s took two teams to Bakewell to play in a round-robin with Bakewell and Matlock. The two teams were relatively even and they were selected them to try and get people playing together who had not played in a team together before.

The pitches at Bakewell have large areas and small goals and therefore goals were at a premium as every shot is basically a long shot!

Team 1 drew both games 0-0, against Bakewell first and then Matlock. The Senior Spireites played well defensively but couldn't get the breakthrough that their play probably deserved.

Team 2 drew the first game against Matlock 0-0 but won the second game 1-0 against Bakewell, with a goal from Simeon Turner. It was a similar story here - the team played well defensively but this time they were able to get a decent shot into the corner of the goal.

An encouraging start for both teams. Well done guys!
