Matlock Dementia and Prostate charity tournament raised £4400
Matlock Walking Football Club arranged a charity non-stop football match in early August where they raised £4400 by playing continuously for 6 hours. The money raised will be split between two important charities involved in Dementia and Prostate Cancer treatment.
The Senior Spireites participated in the event with two teams, each playing for an hour. The Club subsidised an overall contribution of £200 to the charities to help Matlock reach their goal. Well done to all the teams and players involved in this very worth while event.
Annual Foot Golf Tournament took place on August 22nd
The annual Foot Golf Tournament took place at the Barlborough Links Golf Course on 22nd August. It was a close competition with Matthew Robinson, son of Graham Bee, coming out as the winner. Rob Church came second and third place was tied between Jason Sockett and Paul Markwell.
The event over 18 holes was a challenge in the windy conditions but the match was played in a friendly, competitive spirit with plenty of encouragement when things were going wrong for most of the players on hole 8 and 17! Thanks to Rob for organising this fun event.
Following the game there was the customary visit to the Royal Oak at Barlborough Village to swap stories of near misses and "if only" shots.
Unique opportunity to play at Chesterfield FC's ground
The Club was offered the unique opportunity to play on the pitch of Chesterfield FC, newly promoted from the National league to the Second Division. On May 8th over 50 members of the Senior Spireites took advantage of this once in a lifetime change to play on the (almost) hallowed turf of our local team.
The Senior Spireites have a long history of links with Chesterfield FC and to use the pitch that the professional players use was a real treat. The playing sessions took place on 4 pitches, that were a quarter of the full size pitch, as a 6-a-side games. The weather was excellent which added to the very enjoyable occasion that was enjoyed by all the participants.
In mid-May the Walking Football World Championships (organised by the IWFF - International Walking Football Federation Council) are being held at the Chesterfield FC' SMH Group stadium with teams from Australia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, France, Wales, Poland and the hosts, England. The Senior Spireites are heavily involved in the event providing marshaling services and welcoming the players to Chesterfield.
Happy 80th Birthday Barry Smith!
The players at Hasland and Dronfield celebrated Barry Smiths 80th Birthday in early May.
Barry was suitably ‘chuffed’ with his card and cake. Although there was only one candle on the cake in case of a ‘Fire Hazard’ with eighty candles!
Special thanks to all concerned and for signing his card and a BIG THANKS to Keith Arrowsmith too for his rendition of Happy Birthday on the cornet.
AGM held in March 2024
The Club's AGM was held on Monday 18th March 2024 and was attended by over 35 members. Reports on the last 12 months' activities by the Club were presented by Malc Perks, Chair, Neil Haddy, Treasurer and Ian Edmundson, Secretary. Copies of their reports can be viewed using the links below together with a copy of the 2023 Financial Accounts.
The current Committee members were all thanked for their hard work and dedication to their roles and each one was re-elected for the next 12 months by the membership.
Challenge game played against Nottingham
In February at Queens Park, Chesterfield, the Club played a challenge game against Nottingham. All of the players on both teams had Cancer and Heart issues and the match was a celebration of still being able to play football and enjoy life.
It was a very competitive game, finishing in a 2-2 draw.
Many thanks to Mel Pullen for arranging the fixture and managing the Senior Spireites team. Well done to everybody involved!
Successful match against the Women's team held
The first challenge match between the Senior Spireites Men's team and the Spirettes Women's Walking Football team was held at the Dronfield Akademy in late 2023.
The game was played in a competitive but friendly spirit and the overall event was very enjoyable. The two teams played 4 x 15 minutes sessions which the Men's team eventually won 5-1. The match was closer than the end score suggests with one of the quarters being 0-0.
For the men's team there were goals from Alan Reynolds, John Dacey and Jeff Evans. Norman Green made several good saves to restrict the Spirettes to a single goal. Dee-Ann Lewis scored for the women's team and there were some excellent saves from Tricia Borrell.
